The Eye of the Tiger
My team name, The Eye of the Tiger, has special meaning for me. Back in 2014, after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 13 years earlier, I was training for my first Ironman race at the age of 50. As part of my training, I created a playlist of songs with only positive messages. Songs about things like courage and fortitude - any message that would leave me feeling strong, capable and powerful. I knew I wouldn't be listening to music during the competition, but I wanted to be sure any song that might pop into my head that day would be uplifting and encouraging. The Rocky theme song "The Eye of the Tiger" was my favorite, and I listened to it often during my year of training.
Fast forward to 2023 after being diagnosed with Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer. The day I walked into the infusion center for my first chemotherapy treatment, there was music playing quietly in the waiting room. Sure enough, the song playing as we exited the elevator into the waiting room was "The Eye of the Tiger." Tears welled in my eyes, and I knew that although the road would be long and challenging, I would successfully reach and cross the finish line. In August 2023, when I completed my chemo treatments, I hoped I had crossed the finish line. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with a recurrence in January 2024, and I was back in treatment again.
I have received the most amazing care from the Wilmot Cancer Institute, and I am proud to participate in the Wilmot Warrior Weekend September 21-22, 2024, in Rochester, NY. Wilmot Warrior Weekend is a fundraiser to help create new life saving treatments and cures for cancer patients in New York and around the world.
For my part, I will participate in the 5k run/walk event on September 22, 2024. The date is quite serendipitous, given I completed Ironman Maryland almost exactly 10 years ago on September 20, 2014! Back then, I was 50 and on a quest to complete something I had dreamed of all my adult life. Today, as I turn 60, I am on a quest to continue my adult life by overcoming cancer that is trying to take it.
In honor of my 60th birthday, I have set our team fundraising goal at $6000. I welcome all who would like to participate AND fundraise with me to join my team, and I certainly invite any and all donations to this personally important cause.
Please consider supporting my efforts by donating to my fundraiser and let’s leave cancer in the dust!
