Bruce was born with Microphthalmia 12, an incredibly rare genetic condition. He had a heart defect, raised diaphragm, and small, underdeveloped lungs. He was intubated shortly after birth, and required a ventilator as well as several other life-saving procedures while still an infant. His chances of survival were low, and doctors cautioned us against getting our hopes up.

After seven months, Bruce came home from the NICU with a trach and g-tube. He is almost five years old now, and has stunned everyone with his incredible progress. His heart defect has been resolved, and recently he was successfully decannulated (had the trach removed). He is breathing on his own, a feat we once were uncertain was even possible. He demolishes every obstacle in his way, and we are so unbelievably proud of him. That said, we know he wouldn't be here today if it weren't for the wonderful care he received in the NICU at Golisano's. Participating in the Stroll for Strong is our opportunity to say "thank you" and to give back a little bit.
