Welcome to My Personal Stroll For Strong Kids Page
We walk for our daughter, Caroline Shea Fitzsimmons who was born on August 11, 2017. Caroline was born with a Congenital Heart Defect (TAP-VR) that was found at birth. She had open heart surgery at five days old and was finally able to come home on August 25th, 2017. Caroline spent the next (almost) three months at home with Mom, Dad, and her big brother Brennen. In mid November 2017 Caroline caught a virus....not usually a big deal. She ended up having swelling in her legs that landed her in the Emergency room. It turns out, the repair that was done on her heart was compromised and she would need another surgery. Surgery was scheduled and the outlook seemed good. Suddenly, Caroline went into cardiac distress and required emergency open heart surgery. During that surgery her heart stopped but was manually restarted. She was brought back up from surgery on ECMO (a machine that pumps and oxygenates blood outside the body, allowing the heart and lungs to rest). We waited for her to recover but sadly her little body was unable to fight off the virus and recover from major surgery. On November 25th, 2017, with her Mom and Dad holding her hand, Caroline passed away. We walk in loving memory of our little girl <3 It is hard to know how to parent a child who is no longer with you, but there is an incredible desire to do so. The stroll for Strong provides a day that we can do just that. It is a day that is all about Caroline for us and having our friends and family support us on that day means the world! Golisano Children's Hospital was absolutely amazing throughout both of our stays at the Hospital with Caroline and in all of the care she received in between. We will always hold a special place in our hearts for all of the amazing Doctors, Nurses and staff that were a part of Caroline's journey. We hope that through fundraisers like The Stroll for Strong Kids, we can help provide for other families of Golisano Children's Hospital <3
