In May of 2018 my dad was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Six months later, he passed away.
In May of 2021 my brother was diagnosed with a low grade non - invasive cancerous tumor which required surgery to remove.
In May of 2022 I was diagnosed with grade II adenocarcinoma of the endometrium, also known as uterine cancer. It required a total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Although I am still recovering from this major surgery, it was stage 1 and at this point my oncologist does not recommend any further treatment other than regular scans and visits for the next couple of years.
Three out of six Maiolas received a cancer diagnosis in the past four years, all in the month of May.
NOW, we can focus on the whys and the unfairness of it all. We can walk around devastated and heart broken. We can be scared, sad, frustrated, bitter, and angry. Trust me, we have felt every one of those emotions.
OR… we can turn all of this into something positive. We can honor the memory of our father and we can try to help others by attempting to put a dent in the fight against cancer. THAT is our choice.
Each year, thousands of people are diagnosed with cancer. It's time to bring the community together to make a difference for those cancer impacts.
