Oliver was a Golisano Children’s Hospital patient immediately upon birth. During Oliver time in utero, he was diagnosed with a CPAM (Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformation) in his upper left lung. He was closely monitored by the Strong Hospital Staff during his mother’s pregnancy. Upon birth, Oliver was not breathing and immediately transported to the NICU. There Oliver received the absolute best treatment and care. Following his NICU stay, he received multiple scans and tests to determine that he would need his left lung removed as a result of the malformation. At just one and a half months old Oliver entered surgery. Dr. Arca and the surgical team worked diligently to get the CPAM removed for 8 hours. The surgery ended up having to be an open procedure and much more extensive than the scans had showed. Once in surgery, it was clear that Oliver’s left lung was completely inactive and harboring many infections as a result of not properly cycling air. Dr. Arca made many executive decisions during Oliver’s surgery that ultimately saved his life. He recovered for many months and he is now a happy and healthy 1 year old. The Guertin Family cannot thank Dr. Arca and the Children’s Hospital Staff enough for saving Oliver’s life. Oliver will be monitored yearly for the foreseeable future but his future is very bright thanks to the surgical team.
The annual Stroll for Strong Kids Walk and 5K Run will be held on Saturday June 1, 2024 where Golisano Children's Hospital supporters will enjoy a family-friendly atmosphere full of activities.
