Topic A - Keeping Your Brain Healthy As You Age

Presenter: Feng Vankee Lin, PhD, RN, Assistant Professor of Nursing and Psychiatry

Topic Discussion: Our lifestyle choices like mental activities, physical exercise, and social engagement play important roles in how well our brain functions during the aging process. People who are mentally, physically, and socially active often think faster and sharper, and live longer. Come learn about how having an active lifestyle as you age will help your brain remain healthy.

Topic B – Stressed? Tired? Your Risk for Heart Attack

Presenter: Mary G. Carey, RN, Ph.D.

Topic Discussion: Heart disease, including heart attack, remains the world’s number one killer. Your level of stress and stress itself, as well as your quality of sleep and sleep disorders, all play an important role in your risk for heart attack. For the past 5 years, Dr. Carey has been working with firefighters—who are four times more likely to have a cardiac event than the general population—to evaluate whether a more restful environment will help to lower average heart rate and cardiac risk. Come learn about how her work could help reduce your chance of a heart attack.
