Transforming Musculosketal Health

University of Rochester Medical Center's Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation prides itself in providing consistent national leadership as one of the top NIH-funded research programs in the Country. We have the most comprehensive orthopaedics group in the region-with more than 40 board-certified physicians-serving more than 170,000 patients a year. There is still more to be done. Come learn how the Department of Orthopedics is transforming Musculoskeletal Health:

Session 1 - 6:15pm (Choose One Topic)

TOPIC 1: DEVELOPMENT OF A MRSA VACCINE FOR BONE INFECTIONS

MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus), is so pervasive that in 1998, it surpassed HIV as the leading cause of infectious death in the U.S. and now causes 120,000 deaths per year. In the context of orthopaedic surgery, infections are rare and yet, when they do occur, they’re often serious, costly, and cause long-term health problems for patients, which could be prevented or treated by the MRSA vaccine being developed in the Center for Musculoskeletal Research.

Presenters: Edward Schwarz, PhD and Addisu Mesfin, MD

TOPIC 2: CENTER FOR HUMAN ATHLETICISM MUSCULOSKELETAL PERFORMANCE AND PREVENTION: MUSCULOSKELETAL CARE FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES

Plans are underway for a Center for Human Performance to provide specialty musculoskeletal care in a nationally recognize model emphasizing innovation and quality. The Center will utilize integrated research and evidence based delivery models to provide musculoskeletal care for people of all ages and physical abilities.

Presenters: Michael Maloney, MD and Kostantinos “Dino” Vasalos

Session 2 - 7:15pm (Choose One Topic)

TOPIC 1: INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR CUSTOM BONE REGENERATION

Imagine not being able to walk due to large bone defects due to trauma or a tumor. In the future, stem cells harvested from the patient’s own hip bone will be grown and transplanted back in the patient on a 3D-printed replica of the missing bone designed from the patient’s CT scan, allowing for custom bone regeneration.

Presenters: Wakenda Tyler, MD, MPH and Hani Awad, PhD

TOPIC 2: PRECISION MEDICINE FOR ORTHOPAEDIC CARE

In the new information technology age of medicine, URMC has developed the first of its kind measurement of patient outcomes. Come learn how we utilize digital sports analytics for preventing injury, and personalize care unique to each patient.

Presenters: Judy Baumhauer, MD and Dave Mitten, MD
